An air source heat pump extracts heat from outside air and transfers it into your home as space heating and hot water, using around a third of the electricity that a direct electric heater would consume for the same output. They work in typical UK winter temperatures and are now a practical alternative to gas boilers in a wide range of Cambridge properties, from 1930s semis with solid walls to newer builds with high insulation levels.
Installation involves mounting an outdoor unit in a suitable location - a rear garden or side passage is typical in Cambridge's denser residential streets - running refrigerant pipework into the property, and connecting to either existing radiators or underfloor heating. In most cases we also install or replace the hot water cylinder to one compatible with heat pump flow temperatures. A full installation takes between two and four days depending on the complexity of the pipework and any changes needed to the internal heating circuit.
Heat pumps perform best when the heating system is designed around lower flow temperatures than a conventional boiler uses. This sometimes means upsizing radiators in a room or two. Skipping this step is the main reason some installations deliver disappointing efficiency figures. We carry out a full heat loss calculation for the property before recommending a system, which ensures the output is matched to your actual demand rather than a generic estimate.
We handle the full installation from survey to commissioning and can assist with the Boiler Upgrade Scheme application, which currently offers a 7,500 pound grant towards the cost. Our engineers are F-Gas registered, which is a requirement for heat pump refrigerant work.
